Are You Like Andrew?

Daily reflection questions: Am I leading others to Christ? Do I persevere in sharing the Good News of Jesus’ Gospel without being notice or recognized? The Gospel authors write little about Andrew the brother of Peter. But what is written gives an example of being faithful. Quotes are from the article by Joel Ryan available on crosswalk.com. Scripture is from Berean Standard Bible (BSB).

Who was Andrew?

John 1:35-42

35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” 37And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

38Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked.

They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?”

39“Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and spent that day with Him. It was about the tenth hour.

40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s testimony and followed Jesus. 41He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated as Christ).

42Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated as Peter).

Andrew was a fisherman and brother to Peter. He was a disciple of John the Baptist. He is the one who brings Jesus to Peter.

Do you bring people to Jesus? If you know Him personally, are you sharing Him with others?

Andrew & Small Meal

He is the one who brings the lad’s small loaves and fish to Jesus.

John 6:8-9

8One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9“Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?”

Andrew had no idea of how Jesus could feed the thousands gathered, but he brought what was at hand. Jesus takes this small, seemingly insignificant lad’s lunch and feeds thousands. What can you bring forth for Christ to multiply?

Following and Serving Christ

“That we ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed.”

Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God

Are you willing to bring what God has given you? The little things are avenues for His grace, compassion, and kindness to shine through your life. Consider that none of the disciples were formally educated as Pharisees or other “religious” leaders. They were a collection of tax collector, fishermen, tradesmen, and other commoners. Yet, Jesus calls them to follow and spread His Good News.

Therefore, the pattern we see in Andrew’s character involves a willingness to be used by Jesus, no matter how small the task, and a desire to bring individuals to Jesus without hesitation. . . Andrew knew his gifts, knew his calling and knew the role God had asked him to play in building His kingdom. He did so faithfully without ever needing to receive credit for his actions.

There are many faithful followers and disciples who serve “behind the scenes.” It’s all about faithfulness and willingness to serve not education or social prominence.

Apostles like Peter and later Paul would go on to have very prominent and public ministries. This was their calling. They would speak in front of multitudes and lead thousands to Christ. However, many more ministers of the gospel have labored in relative obscurity and gone on to receive a crown of glory for their faithfulness as well. Andrew was one such disciple.
