Hope in Life’s Storms

After several days of severe weather with strong thunderstorms and heavy rain, I’ve enjoyed a couple of days of clear, fair weather. Storms will come into our journeys of faith! Charles Spurgeon provides valuable insights in the quotes cited in this post. Source of Quotes: The Spurgeon Library. Images created using Night Cafe Studio A.I.

Calm Seas of Life: Real Danger

“Storms afford the safest sailing for a Christian, calms are for him more terrible than whirlwinds; deep waters know no rocks, shallow waters that gaily ripple are the perils of the sea of our life.

Far out upon the ocean, where the horizon hath its round ring, and nothing is within sight, the ship is seldom much in danger; but near the shore, when the white cliff gladdens the eye of the mariner, there the pilot must look well to his helm”

The shallow waters near the coast are the most dangerous for the ships during the age of sail. Modern ships take on pilots to guide them safely through narrow channels and into port.

Complacency and focusing on being comfortable instead of being faithful and active in our calling are real dangers to our spiritual growth and transformation.

The Anchor of Hope

“It is often so with us; when the winds are out and the storms are raging there is plenty of fear, but there is no danger.

We may be much tossed, but we are quite safe, for we have an anchor of the soul both sure and steadfast, which will not start. One blessed thing is that our hope has such a grip of us that we know it.

He holds us close even when the storms of life seek to send us drifting away. No storm nor adversary can snatch us away from His firm grip!

Jesus speaks about being the Good Shepherd in John 10:28-30

28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. 29My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30I and the Father are one.”

Because He is God and with God, we are secure in His hands! When the storms crash into your life, remember that He is the Calm! This gives us a firm hope!

Anchor of hope that lifts us toward Christ

“In a vessel you feel the pull of the anchor, and the more the wind rages the more you feel that the anchor holds you.

Like the boy with his kite: the kite is up in the clouds, where he cannot see it, but he knows it is there, for he feels it pull; so our good hope has gone up to heaven, and it is pulling and drawing us towards itself”

Great Faith means Great Trouble

Consider these words and Hebrews chapter 11

“It little matters, you know, whether a man has no burden and no strength, or a heavy burden and great strength. Probably of the two, if it were put to the most of us, we should prefer to have the burden and the strength. I know I should. Now, there is generally this for you, that if you have little trouble, you will have little faith; but if you have great faith, you must expect to have great trouble. A manly spirit would choose to take the trouble, and take the faith too”

Storms and troubles in life remind us that our strength and resilience are limited. Are we not like the disciples in the storm with Jesus asleep? Often our faith is limited and God desires to increase it!

Keep pressing ahead in your journey! Consider these wise words:

“Be of good courage. There are few storms, after all, that are ahead, to those that have passed through many already. The further we are on the road, the less there is of it to bear

  1. I find that when I am out for a run and bone tired the only way to make it up that last hill is to look at the road. It’s surprising how easy that hill is when I m not staring it down.
